Girls Power Tech Day

As social media is growing and becoming more and more popular, having a good social media presence has become super important. Building your brand has become simpler due to social media growth.

I learned a lot about building a good brand and having good social presence at Cisco’s Girl Power Tech day. I got the once in a lifetime opportunity to spend a whole day with 24 other girls from the Lake Washington School district at Cisco’s Girl Power Tech, hosted by the employees at Cisco.

When we first got to Cisco’s Bellevue location, we were greeted with goody bags with many great goodies, which is a great start for the day. Then we listened to Mariette Miller, Lindsey Zydel, and Morgan Workman’s presentation. They discussed two key points. Firstly, they presented on social media use for sharing accomplishments. They explained that everyone should express their achievements and show what they are passionate about. The second point was the use of social media to connect with others. Social media is a great platform to meet new people as well as continue and nurture a connection with people. Also, the three ladies showed us the importance of connections through their own stories of how they got into their career. It was fascinating to listen to all of their stories! Through their stories I learned that everyone and anyone you meet could eventually influence and help you go ahead in your career and life. Although social media has many pros, as it is said, all good things have an evil side to them. We were also told about the dangers of social media. Being aware of everything we post on social media is very important as everyone can see what you have posted. Also, just because you delete something that you have posted doesn’t mean it will be gone forever, that post will always be there somewhere in the backend.

After their presentation, Mariette, Lindsey, and Morgan showed us around the Cisco office. They introduced us to some of the cool technology they use in their office. For example, they showed us the technology they have in their meeting rooms. They introduced a device they use for meetings, it’s like a big tablet. This device allows Cisco employees to connect with others for meetings. On that device they can video chat with others who are not able to physically be there for a meeting. It seems like everyone they video chat with is there in the room with them because of the great voice recognition and visual display.

Next, we were able to actually experience using this device when we got the opportunity to connect with other girls around the United States who were also attending Girl’s Power Tech. First, we talked to the girls in other states. They were from all around USA, some from California and some from Texas. After, we got to listen to Katie Holloway, a Paralympian who represents USA through playing volleyball. She talked about her journey of becoming a gold-medalist Paralympian. Also, Katie discussed her struggles of self-doubt and explained how hard work made her such a great athlete despite all the difficulties that came her way. She is a great example of how far passion and determination can take you.

Lastly, Cisco gave us the chance to participate in a speed mentoring session with the Cisco employees. We got to spend one on one time with four Cisco employees. This gave us the opportunity to ask the employees questions about life working in tech as well as create some important connections with them. Some of the women I got to talk to were Karene Franquelo and Cole Schultz-Wilkerson. Along with talking about life in tech they also discussed the importance of having more women in tech. This whole experience encouraged me to continue learning more about computer science and to pursue a career in computer science. I truly learned a lot through this experience and met some great people. Thank you so much Cisco for hosting this event!
